The West Coast Eagles helped the City of Stirling celebrate NAIDOC week recently.

Eagles stars Josh Hill, Lewis Jetta, Mark Hutchings, Jamie Bennell, Simon Tunbridge and Brant Colledge attended the City’s official celebration at Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka last Wednesday.

The event kick started with a Welcome to Country followed by the raising of the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Australian and West Australian flags.

Attendees were later treated to various performances of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dances and music before West Coast’s representatives entertained the crowd with its inflatable kicking station.

While three of the players helped NAIDOC celebrators fine tune their drop punts, the others interacted with and signed autographs for doting West Coast fans.

Another group of Eagles are set to sacrifice their day off to visit Banksia Hill Detention Centre tomorrow to assist with its NAIDOC celebrations where they will deliver skills sessions while offering some advice and mentorship to the participants.

NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC is celebrated not only in indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
